It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of ASCE founding member Rolando Castañeda in Washington, D.C. on April 14. Rolando was a very active contributor to ASCE as a board member and in numerous papers presented at our Annual Meetings and published in the Proceedings of the Association as well as a contributor to ASCE’s blog. He showed unusual insight into the workings and foundations of the Cuban economy and social structure. His acute analysis clarified many difficult points regarding Cuba’s macroeconomic situation and international trade. Early on he was prescient regarding the perils involved in Cuba’s dependence on Venezuelan aid and finance. Rolando’s perception and sharp logic helped propel many discussions at ASCE’s meetings towards a better understanding of the complexities of Cuba.
