Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (ASCE)

2023 Annual Conference

August 4-6, 2023

ASCE is issuing a call for papers and panel proposals to be presented at its 2023 Annual Conference, which will be held in Miami, at the Modesto Maidique Campus of Florida International University (FIU), August 4-6. 2023. The Conference is co-sponsored by FIU’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI).

Abstracts of papers or panel proposals should describe original work related to Cuba’s economy in a broad sense, including economic policy, legal, sectoral, and social aspects of economic development. Cuba’s exodus and the Cuban diaspora and its economic and social relationship with the island are also topics of interest.

In particular, the 2023 conference will focus on Cuba’s current economic problems and the Cuban government's announced responses (reforms). We are looking for papers assessing those reforms and suggesting policies that improve them.

While the focus will be on economic reforms, we also welcome Cuba-focused papers dealing with the political or social economy, economic history, lessons from other countries, international commercial relations, demography, labor market issues, and the diaspora.

Abstracts or panel proposals must not exceed 250 words and must be accompanied by a 150-word biography for each author. They must be received by email to and to by May 31, 2023. Include the words “ASCE 2023 CONFERENCE ABSTRACT” in the subject line. Authors of accepted papers or panels will be required to register for the annual conference. Registration procedures and logistical information will be available on the ASCE website.

Papers presented at the Conference that meet style guidelines will be eligible to be included in pdf format in the ASCE Papers and Proceedings website.
