Student Prize

The student prize competition is open to students from around the world and is judged by a panel of ASCE members under blind review.

ASCE Student Prize

One of the cornerstones of ASCE’s outreach to young scholars is the ASCE Student Prize, which awards the author of the best undergraduate and graduate paper on Cuban economic issues with the following:

  • a cash award,

  • travel and lodging costs to attend and present their work at ASCE’s annual conference,

  • one year of ASCE membership, and

  • publication in Cuba in Transition.

The Committee members who will choose the best papers are: Mario González-Corzo (Lehman College and CUNY, New York), Dolores Espino (Florida International University), and Carmelo Mesa-Lago (University of Pittsburgh).

The current members are Mario González-Corzo (Lehman College and CUNY, New York), Carmelo Mesa-Lago (University of Pittsburgh), Enrique Pumar (Santa Clara University), and Michael Strauss (Centre d’Etudes Diplomatiques et Strategiques, France).

Anyone can nominate original papers authored by undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. The papers should address topics related to Cuba’s domestic issues, its foreign relations, Cuban-Americans or Cuba in comparative perspective.

Previous Competitions

  • First Place: Pablo Boorsman-Mendoza from Utrecht University (Netherlands), won for his paper on “Peripheral Ideas that Won’t Fly: EU Foreign Policy Decisions on Cuba and US Influence.”

  • Second Place: There was a tie for second place in the graduate category.  These papers were presented by Julie Rausenberger of the University of Louvein (Belgium) whose paper was entitled, “Importing Modernity: Foreign Fashion and Identity-Making in Urban Cuba” and by Kate Gaffney of  New York University whose paper was entitled, “The Destruction of Havana’s Neighborhoods: When Heritage Tourism Becomes a Priority Over Habitable Housing.”

 Undergraduate

  • First Place: Anthony Bencivengo from Sarah Lawrence College who presented on, “Sembrando la Sostenibilidad.”
